本义为“驾驶（车辆）”，作不及物时，常见搭配为：

1. drive to S.W.驾车去某地，如：

I am planning to drive to Toronto next week.

2. drive down XX road沿着某路驾驶，如：

He turnd off his lights and drove down a dirty road.

3. drive off驾车离开，如：

Sorry sir, this is non-parking area; please drive off immediately.

作及物时，常见搭配为drive sb to S.W.开车送某人，如：

My father often drives me to school.（注意：开车送某人回家为drive sb home）。

在以上的释义中，drive还是我们印象中的drive，与驾驶这一动作息息相关，但在托福雅思考试，以至外刊杂志，新闻报道中，它却不止如此，比如：

In other words, they gave no indication of an appreciation of either the range of ways in which rainforests are important or the complex social, economic and political factors which drive the activities which are destroying the rainforests.（C4T1P1） 

句子有些长，简单提取出主干部分：In other words, they gave no indication of an appreciation of either the range of ways（in which......）or the complex social, economic and political factors（which drive......）。换句话说，没有任何的迹象表明他们能够理解，理解什么呢？内容有二（因为either......or......），一为范围；二为复杂的社会经济政治因素。

什么方面的范围呢？雨林是重要的方面的范围（也就是雨林在那些方面是重要的）；什么复杂的社会经济政治因素呢？drive正在摧毁雨林的活动的社会经济政治因素。此处的drive理解成驾驶车辆显然不可，但当驾驶车辆的时候，我们发动引擎，车辆启动，这其中有cause sth. to happen的动作，因此，此处的drive可以理解为“导致，造成”之意；车辆启动，向前行驶，这其中有make sth advance/develop的动作，因此也可理解为“促进”。

这样的例子还有：

除此之外，我们在驾驶时，掌控着方向盘，车辆随我们意志而行，因此，drive也有force sb/sth to do sth之意。如：

Torrential rain drove the players off the course.

大雨滂沱，选手们不得不离开赛场。

最后，需要注意的是drive除了动词词性，还有名词词性。大体上与上述的动词含义相同。比如：

Brazil's drive toward independence from Portugal proceeded as a relatively bloodless transition between 1808 and 1822.

1808到1822年间，巴西脱离葡萄牙统治走向独立的运动是一场相对温和的运动。

Among the drives behind this transition, XX stands out.
