1. What do you think of the saying: money is the root of all evil?
As far as I am concerned, it is not money itself that creates evil, but it is the endless desire that leads to evil behaviors. In the 2008 Financial Crisis, for instance, many investment companies collapsed overnight. The reason behind is not directly related to the additional value it had created in the capital market. Instead, there were a great number of corrupted managers who plotted for more power for themselves. Therefore, it is irrational to conclude that money is the root of all evil before carefully examining what roles people are playing in the monetary world.
2. Is it important to teach children how to manage their pocket money?
Yeah, absolutely! Children are innocent and most don’t know the worth of money. They need guidance from their parents or teachers to learn about the value of money and learn how to spend it wisely. I mean, if you look around, a lot of rich people nowadays were already sensitive about money when they were still kids. I’m not being material here, but I guess if we wish a comfortable life for our children when they grow up, we should probably start early in their life to train their financial mind.
3. In your country, do parents give children money for doing housework?
Ah, I guess some do, most don’t though. In China, having children do housework is not a big deal. I mean, my parents made me wash dishes and clean my bedroom since I was, what, ten years old? I never got a penny for it! And as far as I’m concerned, most of my friends had similar experiences. I suppose it’s because of China’s traditions which demand us to maintain the filial piety parents- children relationship, otherwise, you are not a good child. But having said that, I know that some parents are rule-breakers, and they pay their children for the labor work.
4. Is it important for children to have a right attitude towards money?
Definitely so! Money is a big subject in the society, as well as in the individual’s welfare. I’m not saying it’s the only factor that makes us happy, but it definitely matters a lot to our happiness. So helping children realize the essence of money and then develop a reasonable attitude towards money is indeed important. If a child doesn’t know how to use money properly, he’s a lot likely to get into troubles when he grows up, whether for poverty or corruption. So yeah, the financial education to the young children is very important and we should think about how to do it properly.
5.What kinds of occasions require people to send money as gifts?
Well, are you talking about in China? Ah, in Chinese culture, many occasions nowadays can be passed by sending money as gifts, like weddings, birthdays, Chinese New Year and such big events. Even when a family sends a child off to college, this child usually would get a big deal of money from the elders in the family as congratulation gifts! It’s bizarre, don’t you think? But anyway, gift-shopping itself can even be more annoying and time-consuming. I suppose that’s why people would rather just give cash instead. Well, cash can never go wrong in China. You spend it however you want.
